Putting on a play involves more people than the actors on stage. That's especially true with community theatre, where volunteers are the life blood of every production. In turn, volunteering at a community theater provides opportunities to build skills. Volunteers are the cornerstone of any community theatre group and Strauss Theatre Center is lucky to have some of the best. Volunteers are the life-blood of our theatre. Without volunteers donating their time, we could not offer high quality theatre to this community. It doesn’t matter if you have a theatre background or not, Strauss Theatre is a place for you to get involved. People from all walks of life participate, forming new friendships, learning new skills, and gaining self-confidence. What kinds of opportunities are available? Lighting Volunteer Assists technical director with all aspects of lighting, including hanging and focusing lighting instruments. Run the light board during productions. May make minor repairs, such as replacing broken cables, or replacing lamps. Take directions from the Stage Manager during shows Hours: During technical rehearsals, and one hour before show times through the end of show. Sound Volunteer Operate sound board during technical rehearsals and shows Test sound equipment and adjust sound to specified levels Take directions from the Stage Manager. Hours: During technical rehearsals and one hour before show times through the end of show. Backstage/ Run Crew Assist with scene changes during rehearsals and shows. Help actors with costume changes and quick fixes Take directions from the Stage Manager. Hours: During technical rehearsals and one hour before show times through the end of show. Set Construction Volunteer Help technical director with constructing sets from set designs. Assist technical director in maintaining scene shop tools. Hours: Between 10 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday Ushers Ushers provide not only a valuable service to the Strauss Theatre Center, but also serve as the face of Strauss to our patrons. Donating your time helps make the Strauss Theatre Center what it is today- not only a highly respected theatrical establishment, but an indispensable part of Northeast Louisiana as a whole. We depend on ushers to be friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable as they represent Strauss Theatre. Ushers generally donate one hour of volunteer time per performance. Typical usher responsibilities are: Greeting patrons,Taking tickets Ushering theatre-goers to their seat (when necessary) Hours: One hour prior to curtain. Box Office Box Office volunteers provide a valuable service by taking reservations, entering memberships, assisting with mail-outs, and most importantly are the point of contact for the membership and public. Box office volunteers must have some working knowledge of computers to learn our box office software program. Box office hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers can also work the box office during performances, handing out tickets and selling tickets. Becoming a box office volunteer is a great way to meet people and make new friends! Hours: Hours are flexible. You can volunteer any time the box office is open for business, You can stay all day, or a portion of the day, the choice is yours. We currently need volunteers Monday-Friday in the morning.
